The Promise of a Glow
The Promise of a Glow was commissioned by James Rodrigue and Eva Jarecke for their choral concert featuring works centering around the theme of the winter solstice. The piece focuses in on the idea that new life and new beginnings await after the Earth’s full rotation on the darkest day of the year. It uses variations of the chords II, III, and V to mimic the 23.5 degree tilt of the Earth’s axis. As the Earth spins, so does the piece. The original progression and staggered entrances slowly rotate, creating a macro palindrome. This piece aims to evoke hope for the future and to serve as a reminder that the sun is always shining, even if it cannot be seen.
