Zig was written for Transient Canvas as a part of the 2019 Charlotte New Music Festival. Inspired my exuberant dog Ziggy, the three movements of the work depict Ziggy's multifaceted personality. In the first movement, Ziggy, "the pup," tries to walk like the "big dogs," tripping and falling along the way. In the second movement, Ziggy experiences his first storm; the prepared marimba imitates the thunder and rain, and the bass clarinet "squeaks" and cries like a puppy in the face of perceived danger.  In the final movement, Ziggy sees a squirrel, and the chase is on.
